How Jubal ...

How Jubal the cat became a pet cancer survivor

By Petco Love Editorial Team | March 21, 2025

Petco Love and Blue Buffalo↗ are proud to partner to help pets like Jubal fight pet cancer. Together, we’ve invested $21 million in universities to help pet parents afford the costs of treatment, and to support pet cancer research.

In May of 2022, Jennie took twelve-year-old Jubal to their veterinarian. Jubal was not being himself — behaving erratically, vomiting, and had trouble keeping food down. She knew something was wrong. During the vet’s examination, they discovered a large tumor in Jubal’s chest. The vet suspected cancer.

Knowing they wanted as much time with Jubal as possible, Jennie and her husband took Jubal to the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine’s teaching hospital for help. “They did an MRI and found out that this tumor was very operable,” said Jennie. However, the surgery would be expensive.

With help from the Petco Love and Blue Buffalo Pet Cancer Treatment Fund available through the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, Jubal was able to receive the care and surgery needed to remove the tumor.

Because Petco Love and Blue Buffalo believe access to veterinary treatment shouldn’t have to be a financial decision, grant investments are made to oncology universities across the country, like the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, to offer support to pet parents with the cost of pet cancer treatment, the #1 disease-related killer of cats and dogs.

After a successful surgery and recovery, Jubal is back to his happy, normal and healthy self. And on his last visit to the vet, his blood work was normal!

“[Petco Love and Blue Buffalo Pet Cancer Treatment Fund] made his normal life possible,’ said Steve, Jubal’s pet dad.
