Adoption in Petco Stores
Join the adoption party at Petco! Adoption event weekends—backed by the power of Petco promotion—can take place in Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores across the country every single weekend. Check with your local store general manager to book your organization’s dates. Availability is limited and first come, first served, so secure your preferred dates soon. You must complete your Annual Data Report to be eligible to participate in our in-store adoption program. These events include customizable marketing collateral for participating organizations and opportunity to earn other partner rewards! Be sure to sign up for our e-news and check your inbox!

Some of Petco’s more than 1,500 stores offer full on-site adoption centers or stationary cat habitats where partners can house and promote their adoptable pets.

Have big goals? We sponsor community adoption events that have a goal of more than 500 adoptions. These events are often held at a location other than a shelter, where multiple animal welfare organizations join together. You may apply for up to three events within this one application.
How to become a partner
Adoption partnership opportunities are available for organizations that actively perform dog, cat, or rabbit adoptions. This includes both 501c3 nonprofits and municipal animal shelters. Before you apply, please familiarize yourself with our application requirements below. Note that although stationary cat habitats may or may not be available at your desired store location, all partners are invited and encouraged to bring pets for adoption as often as possible.

Can I use the cat habitat or adoption center too?
This will depend on availability which will vary from store to store, please make sure you have applied to be a partner and the Petco store leader is aware of your interest.

Can our group apply to showcase pets in more than one Petco?

How do I plan an event with a Petco store?
Partners can coordinate with your store leader to plan your event.

Is my organization required to have insurance before we can do adoptions in a Petco store?
Yes, partners must have general liability insurance in ordered to partner with a Petco store

Is there a required number of adoptions per month?
Each store has adoption goals to support our lifesaving mission. Your organization will play an important part in achieving those lifesaving goals. This question should be answered with a realistic expectation of the number of adoptions you expect to perform.

Should we contact our local Petco store?
Please reach out to your local Petco store and let them know you are interested in showcasing animals for adoption. Indicate which Petco store or stores that you would like to partner with for adoptions on your application. Store numbers and addresses may be found using the Petco store locator. This information is necessary to identify the store(s) for a potential partnership. At least one store number is required. The store number is a three or four digit number found after the name of the store.store locator

What organization financial data will we need to complete the application?
Please have your Form 990, if applicable, or other organizational documents available when filling out the application to assure that you submit accurate amounts. If your organization is a nonprofit that files a Form 990, please answer the questions with the amounts listed on your Form 990. If you do not file a Form 990, please fill in the information from the relevant years’ audited financial statements, if available, or otherwise from unaudited financial statements. If you are a government agency, please have your department or divisional budget available when completing this information, and fill in the information as it is stated on your applicable budget. Timing of financial information: If you are a calendar year nonprofit, your prior calendar-year financial information is required. If you are a fiscal-year organization, your most recent fiscal-year financial information is required.
