Sam the senior cat was waiting to be adopted, and at 7 years old, he found a loving family to share happiness, laughter, and lots of love.

"I’m inside now, safe, well-fed, and wanted. They shower me with all their love and tell me they are so happy they found me."

Hi, I’m Sam, the official greeter here at the ranch. I’ve been here almost four months. I’m 7 years old, feral, and very friendly, but no one wants a senior cat. They worry about illness and “how many years I have left.”

Wait, new people are coming in and I have to go say hello. She is in something I haven’t seen before; they call it a wheelchair. Her husband is pushing her. They tell my caregiver that they are looking for me… ME! I can’t believe it. They saw me on the website. They seem nice, let me go sit with her. She tells me I’m very handsome and they’re looking for a senior cat to share their life with. They want me—not a kitten or a young cat, but me!

My mom told me she had spine surgery and had some setbacks, but she had lots of love to give me. She has some bad days when I lie next to her in bed, and I always purr to let her know I’m right there. She says I brighten her days and make her happy. We watch TV and read, or she plays red dot with me and some neat games on a laptop where I catch mice. I think I take her mind off her pain. She calls me her big handsome boy.

I help my dad unload the dishwasher, fold laundry, and even supervise him cleaning my litter boxes. He talks to me all the time and tells me what a good helper I am.

What is a home? It was scary at first because I never had a home. But now I know home is being held in my mother’s arms, being told how much I’m loved, that I’m a gift from God. I’m inside now, safe, well-fed, and wanted. They shower me with all their love and tell me they are so happy they found me. Out of all my fellow cats at the ranch, this senior proved that age is just a number. My heart has the same amount of love to give as any other cat, maybe even more: I am older and wiser, after all.

Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Cynthia won Furry Friends Adoption Clinic and Ranch in Jupiter, Florida a 2021 Love Stories award.
