Rescued Horse Chooses a Rider
As Tejas learned to trust Pedro, Pedro learned to believe in himself again.
Pedro + Tejas
In building a relationship with an “untameable” horse, Pedro and Tejas learned to trust again, side by side.
"Words are not enough to narrate all the incredible moments we've had, like facing a rattlesnake, jumping a front flip off of his back, climbing the Baja mountains, or laying down on the ground and taking a nap together."
I didn’t grow up around horses. In fact, I never quite liked them as some people do. For me, they were beautiful and probably fun to ride, but that was it. Then I met the ranch, and I met Krystal, and of course, I met Tejas.
Tejas is the son of the first mare that Pretty Horses rescued in Baja and of a champ Bronco horse. He was let loose around the ranch with a pack of rescued dogs when he was a foal, and so he grew up with very strange mannerisms. He is the smartest horse in the whole ranch, but he also believes himself to be half dog, half untameable Bronco. And because of it, when we met, most people would deem him a “trouble horse” and a “liability to ride.”
But when I was asked who I wanted to ride, I chose him. There was something in his eyes that I just can’t quite describe, like a kindness waiting to be found. Or maybe he just showed me a reflection of where I was standing, being deemed “untameable” and a “trouble kid” myself. Whatever it was, the bond was not instant — we struggled, a lot. He bucked, bit, ran and halted his way into every single test he could come up to get me off of him, but what he didn’t know is that every test was making me better and better a rider, and every time I knew better what to do, and with that, he realized I was someone he could trust.
The testing stopped, and little by little, he began to show me his kindness. Five hundred words are not enough to narrate all the incredible moments we’ve had, like facing a rattlesnake, jumping a front flip off of his back, climbing the Baja mountains, or laying down on the ground and taking a nap together. We became inseparable, and it all came from that moment I chose to believe in him, and with it, I chose to believe in myself.
He has made me a better man in every single way I can think of, especially because thanks to him and all that we went through, I rediscovered what it’s like to trust and believe in myself. To say “I’ve got this” while flying meters in the air because of a buck, or to see the trust in Tejas’ eyes.
When I was a child, I dreamt of riding hippogriffs and dragons, but I never once thought I’d get a horse best friend. Today, in Tejas, I have a little bit of all of those. And I don’t think it should be any other way.
