Pippa’s Proposal: Adopted Dog Helps Pet Dad Pop the Question

A playful, loving dog named Pippa helped her new pet dad Andrew take the next step in bringing their family together.

Andrew + Pippa

Andrew and Sydney were talking about adopting another dog—and becoming a forever family for each other, too. When Andrew proposed to Sydney, their newly adopted dog Pippa played a big part in their big day.

"Sydney began sending me pictures of adoptable dogs. At the same time, we were talking seriously about getting married. I finally got the bright idea to combine the two: I would propose at the same time we adopted a new dog. "

My now-wife, then-girlfriend Sydney and I adopted a dog named Jasper in January 2018. We quickly fell in love with Jasper, and he couldn’t be happier to have a fur-ever home. Jasper made lots of dog friends at the park, which helped him get out his puppy energy! We were so happy but felt something was missing.

Sydney feels very strongly about adopting pets, and after adopting Jasper I couldn’t agree more. In August 2019, Sydney began sending me pictures of adoptable dogs. A lot of pictures. At the same time, we were talking seriously about getting married. I finally got the bright idea to combine the two: I would propose at the same time we adopted a new dog.

There were a few hiccups with the plan, especially because adopting a dog is a very tricky thing to keep secret! Between getting approved for adoption, meeting and introducing Jasper to the new dog, and bringing the new dog home, I was going to need a lot of help. Thankfully, Peace4Paws stepped up and made everything go even more smoothly than I thought possible. I was able to meet Pippa and her wonderful foster family, and the bond was instantaneous—she climbed right into my lap and spent our introduction licking my face. But it was up to Jasper to seal the deal. When Jasper and Pippa were introduced they played together right away, so I decided to adopt her the next day for “the big day.”

Under the guise of going to the grocery store, I drove down to the foster’s house to pick up Pippa. About an hour later, I got a text that Sydney was on her way home. The moment had finally arrived. I put a new collar on Pippa with a tag saying, “Will You Marry Me?” Then I balanced Pippa and a bouquet of flowers in my hands and waited by the door. To say Sydney was shocked would be an understatement! She saw Pippa and got a big smile on her face. She didn’t look at the name tag right away, and I wondered for a second if she ever would. Finally, she did! I dropped to one knee and asked her again, but she was still too shocked to respond. Once she recovered, though, she said yes. It was perfect, in no small part because our family became one member bigger.

Since we got engaged and then married, Pippa has become a constant companion to Jasper, a nighttime snuggle buddy to Sydney, and the proverbial baby of our family. She makes us laugh and smile every day and is truly the love of all our lives.

Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Andrew won Peace4Paws in Westwood, New Jersey a 2021 Love Stories award.
