Dog of Their Dreams Brings Hope, Healing, and Renewed Health
Veronica’s husband dreamt that he needed to find a companion animal. Three days later, he saw Pharaoh up for adoption and knew he had to bring him home.

Inspired by a dream, Veronica’s husband was stunned to find the very dog he had imagined up on a pet adoption website. Their family adopted Pharoah the next morning, and have found happiness, renewed health, and gratitude together ever since.
"Life has been exceptionally happier since Pharaoh joined our family. Pharaoh has brought a new ray of hope for my husband’s health, and they do everything together."
The way Pharaoh came into our lives to rescue my husband from a terrible disease that was slowly depleting his existence is nothing short of inspirational. On Nov 9, 2018, at 3 a.m. my husband jumped out of bed yelling, “I found him! I found him!” He had a dream a few days before that God told him he needed a companion, that everything would be all right. We looked at three different adoption centers, but we couldn’t find the right partner. Now, apparently, the companion that was meant for him had just been posted online for adoption.
My husband wanted to camp out at the Humane Society until they opened. I kindly suggested that it would be too early, and we might be considered crazy people—and might not be given the opportunity to adopt him. So at 8 a.m. we made our way to the Humane Society and saw this cute little puppy out for a walk. It was Pharaoh, getting his morning stroll. We were second in line and got there just in time because 10 other people wanted a chance to adopt him, too.
Once we filled out all the forms, we were asked to wait in the kennel for him to greet us. If he liked us, then we would take him home. It was love at first sight: my husband and Pharaoh bonded instantly.
Life has been exceptionally happier since Pharaoh joined our family. Pharaoh has brought a new ray of hope for my husband’s health, and they do everything together: take 10-mile walks, go for long car rides, go on motorcycles rides, eat three nutritious meals a day, watch TV together, and love the family endlessly. Because of Pharaoh, my husband remembers he has a dog first, family next every morning when he wakes up. Pharaoh lets me know when they both are not feeling well and will not leave my husband’s side. Doctors can’t believe the improvement my husband has made, all because of King Pharaoh. My daughter even named her mobile grooming service after him: “Sugar Cookie Paradise” because of the scent I love during the holiday season when he gets groomed.
Pharaoh radiates love and compassion to both humans and canines and you can immediately see the joy when contact is made. He is truly an angel sent from above. As an empty nester, I missed having my kids around and he quickly took on that role as well, acting like my youngest baby, needing nourishment, love, and attention. Our home is now full of love, joy, and laughter which replaced the stress, tension, and despair it once occupied. Our lives have completely made a 360, and we owe it all to Pharaoh “Sugar Cookie” as we call him. Even now writing these lines I have tears of joy rolling down my cheeks because I can vividly relive every moment Pharaoh has given us. We love him to the moon and back. I just hope we have given him the same love in return.
Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Veronica won San Diego Humane Society, Escondido in San Diego, California a 2021 Love Stories award.
