Adopted Kitten Finds Happiness in Outdoor Adventures with Pet Mom

From hiking to kayaking, Noodle the kitten is ready for her next adventure with her pet mom.

Jennifer + Noodle

When Jennifer spontaneously adopted a spunky kitten, she knew she wanted to share her life with Noodle—and her adventures. Now they explore the great outdoors together, from hiking and kayaking to vacationing, and beyond.

"Noodle ended up taking to the harness so quickly that we worked on backpack training, too. When it was finally time to try to go outside, she loved it! She gets the zoomies outside, climbs trees, and has a blast. She is also really good about sitting on the backpack and going for a ride."

This may sound cheesy, but getting Noodle was one of those meant-to-be moments. I went to the shelter with my friend to drop off some donations. We peeked at the cats, and I walked out of there with a spunky little tuxedo kitten. At the time, I had no idea that kitten was going to be by my side for everything!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was home a lot for school. I am currently in veterinary school, and Noodle was the perfect study buddy. She would sleep on my lap while I was in class (over Zoom) and then would play after and help me de-stress. Another thing I love to do to de-stress is to go for a walk or hike. So, I thought, why not combine the two? I could go for a hike with Noodle to unwind from school.

I decided to try harness training with Noodle to see if she was interested in hiking. I wanted to offer her the excitement of the outdoors while keeping her safe at the same time. Noodle ended up taking to the harness so quickly that we worked on backpack training, too. When it was finally time to try to go outside, she loved it! She gets the zoomies outside, climbs trees, and has a blast. She is also really good about sitting on the backpack and going for a ride. Hiking with Noodle was such a great way to forget about my schoolwork stress and the crazy times we were living in and focus on me and her. I think the harness training and adventure lifestyle we have built has really strengthened our bond as well.

I even took it one step further and took Noodle kayaking! She loves that as well. When the weather is nice we go for a little float, and she splashes her paws in the water and naps while we’re out. It puts such a big smile on my face knowing that I can bring her anywhere I may need and that she loves the adventure lifestyle just as much as me! Being able to take Noodle with me on vacations and trips has made these outings so much more enjoyable. Sometimes it can be difficult to find cat-friendly accommodations, but it’s worth it to be able to have her with me and see her enjoying her life.

Noodle has even inspired me to start a blog, sharing my tips on how others can harness train their cats to join them on adventures. I think harness training can be so beneficial for a cat’s health. Not only does it give them exercise, but it also gives them lots of mental stimulation too, which is just as important! Of course, this lifestyle is not for every cat, but for those who enjoy it, it can enrich their lives so much.

Thank you, Capital Area Humane Society, for bringing the best adventure buddy I could ever ask for into my life!
