Murphy the Dog Becomes an Ambassador for Adoptable Pets
At Kansas Humane Society, an adopted dog named Murphy helps families understand the joy and beauty in bringing home a shelter pet.
Ericka + Murphy
When Ericka met Murphy through her work at Kansas Humane Society, she knew he was meant to be her dog. Now the two help educate others on the importance of giving adoptable pets a second chance.
"Thankfully I had Murphy by my side through it all. We bonded so quickly and having him there for me during the past year really helped my mental health while everything was so uncertain."
When I adopted Murphy in January of 2020, I had no idea how much I needed him in my life. I work at the Kansas Humane Society, and I get to meet thousands of pets every year. But from the minute I met Murphy, there was something incredibly special about him.
Every week I take adoptable pets on the news to help them find homes. I picked Murphy as the lucky dog of the week based on a photo before I had even met him. We spent some time playing and cuddling before the TV interview, and I fell in love. During the interview, I couldn’t believe I was trying to convince someone else to adopt him, when I knew in my heart that we needed each other. As soon as we got back to the humane society, I made the decision to add him to my family.
Just a few short months after adopting Murphy, the world changed due to the coronavirus. It was so scary and isolating in the beginning because I had never experienced anything like that before. Thankfully I had Murphy by my side through it all. We bonded so quickly and having him there for me during the past year really helped my mental health while everything was so uncertain.
Deciding to adopt Murphy has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. He’s my best friend, and he never leaves my side. We even celebrate our birthdays together. He comes to work with me each day, and that has made such a positive impact on my coworkers and me. We love to go to the lake, play fetch, meet up with his dog friends, and snuggle in bed every night.
Working at an animal shelter can be very rewarding, but also extremely difficult. We see some of the worst things that a pet can go through, and not everyone is kind. Murphy is such a fun addition to our office. He’s always up for playtime and adventure, hugs and cuddles, or whatever else we need. He’s so sweet and affectionate, and he helps me make it through some very difficult days. He has the funniest, most unique personality of any dog I’ve ever met. I laugh so much more now that I have him in my life.
It feels like Murphy and I were always meant to be together, and I can’t imagine my life without him now.
Taking a chance on a shelter pet can be scary, especially when you don’t know much about their background, but it is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world. Murphy has been a great ambassador for Kansas Humane Society. He loves to meet new people, especially kids, and show them how amazing shelter pets are.
Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Ericka won Kansas Humane Society in Wichita, Kansas a 2021 Love Stories award.
