Michael is a combat veteran who was looking for a service dog, but instead he found support in a “therapy cat” named Mojave.

Michael + Mojave

Michael was a combat veteran who was considering a service dog to help him thrive. Mojave the cat lost his eyesight and needed a family who could help him navigate the world. Together, Michael and Mojave became the perfect partners in healing.

"He truly is my companion and helps me with sleep, patience, and my combat stress. The joy and peace he brings me each day cannot be put into words, and I cannot imagine my life without Mojave."

I am a combat war veteran and was looking into a service dog for companionship and therapeutic value. But my service dog came in the form of a special needs cat named Mojave.

Mojave lost his eyesight at a young age. A month after I adopted him, he got sick with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). For the next 84 days, I had to administer medicine for him every night. We developed a solid bond and grew very close very fast. I would pray with Mojave each night and tell him it will all be ok. He would listen.

My schedule instantly changed each day. I have a new wake-up time, and my room has become a kitty playground. He has truly become my kid. I shop for him more than I shop for myself. Mojave eats better than I do and has a rotating food system with an all grain-free diet. He likes to look outside and listen to the sounds as I explain what he is hearing. My stress levels are on an all-time low and Mojave takes care of me as much as I take care of him.

Mojave sleeps with me each night and wakes me up each morning. He follows me around the house, and I tell him what is going on. I bought him a mesh tent for outside so he can join me to listen to the outdoors and smell all the smells. He is such a well-behaved kitty who is very handsome and has been through a lot at a young age. He truly is my companion and helps me with sleep, patience, and my combat stress. The joy and peace he brings me each day cannot be put into words, and I cannot imagine my life without Mojave.

Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Michael won The Little Lion Foundation in Long Beach, California a 2021 Love Stories award.
