Adopted Dog Helps Child Feel Secure at Night, and Brings her Pet Mom Love and Support

When Jessica and her daughter Callie adopted Lola, they also brought home peace, love, and lots of warm snuggles.

Jessica + Lola

Jessica and her young daughter, Callie, had two dogs when they brought Lola home and they were unsure about what to expect. But Lola quickly became Callie’s steadfast companion, driving away her fear of the dark and helping her sleep soundly by her side.

"I never realized how much my little family needed her, especially my daughter. They became inseparable. Callie loved her so much and you could tell Lola felt the same."

As a single mom, life can be so busy and overwhelming even without having pets. We already owned two dogs, but my 7-year-old daughter Callie kept begging me to find a shelter pet to add to our family. Now while I am up for saving every animal I can, this seemed like a no-brainer to me: the answer was no.

Still, my gut led me to start researching and looking up adoptable dogs and after a few weeks of doing this, I agreed (despite my mind telling me not to) to at least inquire about a dog named Lola. Her story of cruelty and neglect tugged at my heart so much that we went to Fayette County Animal Rescue to meet her.

Quite frankly, I still wasn’t sold—but Callie wanted to take her home right away. I agreed to have the rescue bring Lola to our home one week later for a meet and greet with my other dogs, thinking deep-down, “maybe I should cancel.” I was still having reservations, but I think this dog knew my thoughts. The meet and greet couldn’t have been more perfect. I agreed to let Lola stay that day and the rest is history.

I never realized how much my little family needed her, especially my daughter. They became inseparable. Callie loved her so much and you could tell Lola felt the same. It was Lola that helped transition her to sleeping in her own bed. When my daughter was younger, she used to have terrible nightmares constantly, and even though she outgrew them, she still has a fear of the dark. Callie would talk about wanting to be a big girl and sleep in her own bed but was never ready. Shortly after getting Lola, I told her that maybe we could try it since Lola could sleep in her bed with her. I expected it to take months because Callie has been sleeping with me since she was around 2 years old. But within a few weeks, she was sleeping in her bed every night. I really give credit to Lola for making her feel protected and safe. Now when it is bedtime, Lola is in the bed waiting for Callie.

To say that she won my heart over rather quickly is an understatement. I have never met an animal so grateful to have love, a warm dry home, and food and water. By the way she interacts with us, it is almost like she is thanking us daily. And I am so thankful I gave her a chance to make such a positive impact on our family. We can’t imagine life with her.

Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Jessica won Fayette County Animal Rescue in Rossville, Tennessee a 2021 Love Stories award.
