Cross-Country Trip Takes Couple from Sadness to Joy

Kristine + Bogey

Bogey hasn’t rescued anyone from a burning building, and he doesn’t care if you need a good cuddle. But he did heal our hearts after the loss of our kitty, Boo.

Like many people, we dreamed of traveling after retirement. We bought a small motor home so that we could take Boo with us on our big adventure. To get him used to travel, we took Boo for rides around the block from the time he was a small kitten.

When the day arrived, and we set off down the road in our motor home, I sang “Me and You and a Cat Named Boo”.

"We learned early that Boo was FIV positive. He always appeared healthy, but suddenly became ill on the trip and we lost him in Georgia."

We were devastated. We moped around Georgia for a couple of weeks trying without success to regain the magic of our adventure.

By the time we reached Myrtle Beach, we knew what we had to do. I had always wanted an orange cat and my hubby loved Boo’s beautiful fluffy tail. So, we decided to look for an orange cat with a fluffy tail.

In Surfside Beach, South Carolina, we found Sav-R-Cats International, Inc, a non-profit no-kill shelter, located in a strip mall and managed by Shirley Major. Cats roam freely in this animal shelter, lolling around in tree houses and hammocks. Several cats have been there for years.

As luck would have it, they had two 10-week-old orange kittens with fluffy tails.

As luck would have it, they had two 10-week-old orange kittens with fluffy tails. We sat on the floor to get acquainted. One of the kittens ignored us, but the other one hunched up his back and charged, trying to engage us in play. We were smitten. We adopted him and named him Bogey, a golfing term, in honor of the Myrtle Beach area.

Seven years later, hunching up his back and charging us is still Bogey’s signature move.
We set off again in the motor home with Bogey riding shotgun – his little needle claws firmly anchored in my hubby’s shoulder. Many a motorist honked and took cell phone pictures of our co-pilot.

Bogey is a party wrapped in fur. Night time brings out the devil in him, and there’s plenty of devilish behavior to go around. His all-night antics were responsible for many a late morning starts.

We were on the road for four months visiting 38 states and Canada. We credit Bogey with putting the fun back in our dream trip. He continues to enrich our lives every day with his over-the-top personality.

Hubby often sighs and asks, “Do you think he’ll ever settle down?” My response is, “ I hope not!”

Bogey keeps in touch with “Aunt Shirley” at Sav-R-Cats. They’ve outgrown their small facility and are currently trying to raise funds for a larger shelter where they can continue to do their good work.
