Adopted Cat Helps a Divorcee Get a Fresh Start

After Heather’s divorce, Mochi the cat was there for her with comforting purrs.

After her divorce, Heather was diagnosed with PTSD. A visit to a cat café led her to Mochi, a little cat who brought Heather peace and healing through his gentle presence and unconditional love.

"This small cat helped me work through my depression and start living life again. He made me feel like I had a purpose. Ever since adopting him, my life has continued to improve."

Back in July of 2019, I went through an extremely painful divorce. I was at one of the lowest points in my entire life. Due to the divorce, the abuse I suffered, and the trauma it caused me, I was officially diagnosed with PTSD.

I found myself withdrawing from all aspects of my life that summer. To try and help myself work through everything, I visited a cat café in New York City. It was there I met Mochi. From the moment he sat in my lap, I felt an instant connection with him. I went back multiple times to see if I wanted to commit to him; I was very scared to potentially take an animal home that I wasn’t going to be able to take care of. However, every time I came back to meet new cats and enjoy the time in the cafe, Mochi always found his way to my lap. One of the workers even said that he was choosing me. At that point, I knew he had my heart; and two weeks later, he officially came home with me.

Mochi never left my side. Whenever I struggled, he was always there in my lap or lying on my chest, purring and licking my nose. When I would come home from work, he would always run to the door, meowing and rubbing up against my legs to greet me. Every night, he would curl up next to me and I would drift off to sleep listening to his purrs. Every morning, he would headbutt me as a reminder that it’s time to get up (and feed him of course!) When things got hard and I wanted to give up, I would remember Mochi. Taking care of him gave me a reason to keep on moving forward. This small cat helped me work through my depression and start living life again. He made me feel like I had a purpose. Ever since adopting him, my life has continued to improve.

Two years later, I have now purchased my first house, I am in a new relationship, and I feel happier than I can even articulate. I have a new family. I even got a puppy last year and Mochi has helped her so much with her separation anxiety. Whenever our dog feels stressed, Mochi always goes up to her to let her know she isn’t alone. Now that she’s grown, she never wants to leave his side, and they even play together!

I will never be able to truly express how much Mochi has changed my life. I love him more than words can say. Thank you, Anjellicle Cats, for bringing me and Mochi together.
