Foster Pup Brings Purpose and Meaning to Pet Mom’s Life

From dog walks to puppy cuddles, Cierra and her dog Hamilton find joy in every moment.

Cierra + Hamilton

Cierra felt like her daily routine was growing predictable, so she decided to become a foster for pets in need. Then a dog named Hamilton won her heart and brought happiness and appreciation for the time they share together.

"My typical routine now has excitement and purpose. Walks, snuggles, pool days, and lots of smiles. "

Wake up. Get dressed. Go to work. Come home. Go to bed. Repeat seven days a week, 365 days a year. A life without purpose. A life without happiness. That was my life before Hamilton.

I’m not sure what swayed me to become a foster with Houston Pets Alive. Maybe I felt as though I needed excitement in my life. Maybe I felt as though I needed more meaning to life. Maybe it was due to the love and joy I have for animals. I’ll truly never know, but becoming a foster changed my life.

Hamilton was my third foster animal and the first foster fail. I’m not sure I can really call it a “fail,” though, due to the amount of pure happiness Hamilton has brought into my life.

My typical routine now has excitement and purpose. Walks, snuggles, pool days, and lots of smiles. The grass seems so much greener, and the sun warmer. Silly, I know, but true. I now wake up to a bed full of puppy kisses. Errands now consist of vet appointments… and yes, we celebrate each pound he gains. The only tears I have are from when he lost his first tooth. We both wait patiently at the door for the mailman to drop off his treats and toys. We both go to bed with full bellies and the happiest of hearts.

Although they said Hamilton needed me, I was the one in need. My four-legged best friend. My Hammy Sammy, ham sammich, Hamilton Samilton; I love you.

Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Cierra won Houston Pets Alive! in Houston, Texas a 2021 Love Stories award.
