Readers to the Rescue: A Love of Reading Brought a Girl and her Dog Together

Through sharing stories with adoptable dogs, Brooklyn and her mom Hillary brought a dog named Chippy home.

Brooklyn + Chippy

Brooklyn was inspired to improve her reading skills by sharing stories with adoptable dogs. In reading to Chippy, Brooklyn and her family also found their new best friend.

"She stays with me while I read or do homework. Chippy makes me feel happy, special and loved. She is there for me when I’m upset. I never feel alone because I have Chippy."

When I was six, I didn’t like to read. My mom promised to let me read to the animals at the shelter once I learned how to read well. I reminded mom of her promise. My brother and I started a Facebook page called Readers to the Rescue and began posting about the animals we read to. One day when I came to read, they led us to a new dog named Chippy. She had no fur. She was very calm, and she listened to me.

I felt like I needed her, and she needed me. I wanted to foster her but we had to wait several weeks to make sure she didn’t have scabies. Our dog Nugget gave his approval and we took Chippy home. Chippy and Nugget became best friends.

Chippy’s personality grew and so did her fur. That made me happy! It felt good to take care of her and help her get well. We officially adopted her on April 4, 2020. She makes me feel safe and keeps our yard rodent-free. She plays my games and listens to me.

Sometimes I do my homework with her because she doesn’t move away. She stays with me while I read or do homework. Chippy makes me feel happy, special, and loved. She is there for me when I’m upset. I never feel alone because I have Chippy.

I am thankful to ARF for bringing Chippy into my life and encouraging me to become a better reader. Love, Brooklyn.

Each year, Petco Love Stories invites adopters to share how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Brooklyn won Animal Rescue Foundation in Theodore, Alabama a 2021 Love Stories award.
