Adopted Pit Bull Inspires Disc Enthusiasts and Young Readers Alike
With his big smile and happy energy, Rudy wags his way into the heart of everyone he meets!
"One day I decided to throw a Frisbee and to my surprise and awe, Rudy caught it! I threw it further, and he caught that too!"
Rudy came into my life at a time when I didn’t think I needed another pet. I had a young family and two other dogs, so the thought of one more dog was exhausting. And yet, there was something about Rudy.
He was a Pit Bull who’d had a rough start. He was found on the streets of Louisiana, emaciated and with burns covering his entire back. By the time I met him, he had healed but still had scars, and I was so impressed with his resilient spirit. Even though he’d been hurt, Rudy had so much energy and was so happy.
I decided to foster him to help make sure he found the right family, because if he didn’t have structure he was going to get in trouble. One day I decided to throw a Frisbee and to my surprise and awe, Rudy caught it! I threw it further, and he caught that too! This continued each day. We were having a blast! I decided to enter Rudy in a disc competition and we joined a disc league. He did well, and I was hooked on the sport. Since then, he has competed in multiple disc events allowing us to travel all over the country, many times winning a placement in a sport mainly dominated by Border Collies, cattle dogs, and Australian Shepherds. Rudy has impressed many people in the disc world and opened their eyes to the athleticism and sweet demeanor of Pit Bulls.
Rudy has two young human siblings and is my son’s best friend. Seeing how good he was with them made me think Rudy could help others, too. We took the certification test and he is now a certified therapy dog, passed his Canine Good Citizen test, and regularly goes to libraries and schools so beginning readers can read aloud to him. One little boy told me, “I don’t read very well.” And I told him, “It doesn’t matter to the dogs how well you read, they are just happy to have you read to them!” He smiled and started reading. This is the power of Rudy. You just look at his big goofy grin and smile too.
I started this journey thinking I would find Rudy the perfect home, when all along he was perfect in my home. We regularly go to disc events, have made some great friends, and our bond is stronger than with any dog I have ever had. Rudy has also brought some amazing people from the animal rescue community into my life. People I am blessed to know. He has opened my world up to so many things I didn’t know I needed. I can’t imagine my life without him, and I look forward to all the places his disc and therapy career will take us. I’m so glad I took a chance on the stray pittie who changed my world.
Each year, Petco Love invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award.
