Rescued Greyhound, Sa-id offers a therapeutic presence for children diagnosed with Autism and anxiety, and inspires the adoption of other furry family members.

"We could not have anticipated the changes that would take place in our family as the result of this one simple adoption."

In August of 2004, my husband and I were blessed to welcome triplets into this world, and our lives were filled with the joy of raising our two boys (Alex and Nicolas) and girl (Emma) together as a family. Our lives changed when, at 18 months old, Nicolas was diagnosed with Autism, and again a few short years later when Alex received the same diagnosis. Meanwhile, Emma was struggling with her own diagnosis of Anxiety Disorder and found it difficult to function in everyday social situations. We soon found ourselves running to and from a whirlwind of therapy appointments, counseling sessions, and new school visits as we tried to give each of our children their best chance for success.

Flash forward to 2012, when I had the opportunity to meet a new employee at my office who had two rescue Greyhounds. She introduced me to Hollydogs Greyhound Adoption, whose awesome mission is to save retired racing Greyhounds that otherwise would be destroyed. That August, we reached out to Silvana at Hollydogs and adopted Sa-id, our very first Greyhound.

We could not have anticipated the changes that would take place in our family as the result of this one simple adoption. Sa-id brought so much joy to our children’s lives, and he gave each of them a new-found sense of purpose and confidence. We took Sa-id everywhere, from vacations to ice cream shops, and he quickly became their new best friend. The kids loved working together to come up with silly new nicknames for Sa-id, and often used him as the subject of school assignments such as poems and essays. The neighborhood kids loved to come over and visit with Sa-id, our new gentle giant. Sa-id had quickly become the center of our children’s world.

Our love for Sa-id and the positive changes that he brought to our family left us wanting more. In 2013 we adopted Vera, and then Carey in 2014, both retired racing Greyhounds. 2015 gave us Daisy, and 2017 gave us G.G., both rescued Italian Greyhounds. We have now become a family of 10 (5 humans and 5 rescues) and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

The kids have benefited greatly from the many volunteering opportunities with Hollydogs, whether working at adoption events where they show off Sa-id and try to find good homes for rescued Greyhounds, helping to wash dogs at Hollydogs’ fundraising events, or serving food at Hollydogs’ annual picnics. These volunteering opportunities have helped our kids overcome many social challenges as they interact with both people and dogs for a very worthwhile cause. Emma, now 14, volunteers at a local animal rehabilitation center and has been inspired by dog ownership to someday open and run a rescue facility of her own.

We are so grateful that Sa-id joined our family six years ago. He was truly the start of something (really) good!

Each year, Petco Love invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Diane won Hollydogs Greyhound Adoption in Florida a 2018 Holiday Wishes award.
