Adopted German Shepherd Reminds Family that Every Day is a Good Day
From the dog park to dining out, Lexi keeps her family wagging.
Esther + Lexi
Every day is an adventure with Lexi on the other end of the leash. Since adopting the beautiful German Shepherd, her family is happier (and more present) than ever before.
"She can snap us out of the grumpiest moods in an instant with one tail wag/wiggle butt. In a way, she centers us and reminds us that every day is a good day."
It’s hard to remember our lives, pre-Lexi, since she’s been such a big part of it for so long. She’s turning 10 this October — already! She has opened up a part of our hearts that we didn’t even know existed. She truly is a member of our close-knit family.
Having Lexi in our lives has encouraged us to be more social, adventurous and present. Because of her, we’re always on the lookout for dog-friendly places and events. She accompanies us over ninety percent of the time, which includes eating out at restaurants (patios) and going on vacation. We go out and explore Southern California like we’ve never done before. It’s as if she’s given us a reason to get out of the house and just go out and do something. She loves meeting dogs, getting her sniffs in, whether it be a short trip to our neighborhood park or someplace completely new. She loves sunbathing in our backyard and taking naps. She just enjoys it all. That’s why I say she’s helped us be more present. To watch her simply enjoy wherever we are has encouraged us to have a similar mindset.
Social-wise, she’s an instant conversation starter. We end up chitchatting with strangers — both those with and without dogs — all the time. Through Lexi’s Instagram account (@LexithePupski), we’ve been connected with a huge dog-loving community. We’ve met so many dogs and their owners in person, and we’ve formed some genuine friendships.
Lexi is an instant mood-lifter, too! Seeing her sweet face, petting her soft fluffy fur, giving her a full body massage as she stands between our legs, watching her goofy antics when she’s wriggling around on her back or pouncing around at the park with other dogs. There’s a sense of joy, contentment and comfort when she’s around, even if she isn’t doing anything. She can snap us out of the grumpiest moods in an instant with one tail wag/wiggle butt. In a way, she centers us and reminds us that every day is a good day. We don’t call her the sunshine pup for no reason. She’s a happy-go-lucky pup who brings warmth and joy to those around. When she’s happy, you can’t help but smile along with her.
I can’t say that our lives would have been dull and colorless without Lexi, but I can definitely say that our lives are made much richer because of her.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Esther won Coastal German Shepherd Rescue of Southern California in Irvine, California a 2019 Holiday Wishes award.
