Adopted Dog’s Friendship is the Best Medicine

Six-year-old Elliott struggled with anxiety. Then he met Bindy.

Elliott + Bindy

At 6 years old, Elliott was struggling with anxiety. Then an adopted dog named Bindy gave him the love, companionship and security he needed most.

"When Elliott met her, it was love at first sight. Now he has a best friend. She is wherever he is!"

Elliott is a 6-year-old boy. He is interested in cars, trucks, Legos, getting dirty… everything you would expect from a boy his age. He goes to school, is learning to read and making new friends. He lives with his loving mother and father, just down the street from his adoring grandmother and grandfather. He has no siblings, but this has never been a concern. Sounds like a great kid with a great life!

The part most people on the outside don’t see is the anxiety that Elliott struggles with. He worries about EVERYTHING! He still has difficulty going in rooms of our house by himself, his stomach hurts a lot, he worries about neighbors, family members, what he sees on TV, school, the future, the past… you name it, he has probably worried about it. He has trouble sleeping and being by himself. He has been trying to control these worries and his anxiety. He has some strategies that help, but it has been tough.

Bindy changed all of this when we found her! When Elliott met her, it was love at first sight. Now he has a best friend. She is wherever he is! If he needs to go to his room to get something, he doesn’t need Mommy anymore… Bindy goes with him. He doesn’t worry about falling asleep because Bindy is lying at his feet, keeping him safe. He feeds her, he walks her, he talks to her. She is so very affectionate and he loves to pet her, hug her, kiss her and just be near her. Elliott had his tonsils removed in June and was out of commission for two weeks. Bindy never left his side. She didn’t demand to go outside, for a walk or even play. She laid on the couch or bed beside Elliott during his entire recovery.

Today, Elliott is a changed boy! He is more confident, his stomach doesn’t hurt anymore and his worries are subsiding. We got Bindy in March, and it is now September. I don’t think one day has gone by that Elliott hasn’t thanked me for adopting her. “Thank you mommy for getting Bindy… I love her so much!”

She has changed his life and will be there for him through many ups and downs to come. He now knows the meaning of a true best friend.
