Adopting a furry best friend led Kristin to her soulmate; completing her perfect pack.

"Falling for this guy, I already had the most important stamp of approval—that of my dog."

Sookie the dog

Every little girl dreams of finding her Prince Charming. I just had no idea I’d find mine at the same place I found my dog! Here’s the story.

When I finally moved out on my own, I took the family dog with me. It was just the two of us, and though Nala wasn’t a guard dog, her presence provided a sense of security. Even as age took its toll and playtime decreased, Nala’s excitement when I entered the door never lessened. As quality of life faded, it was time to see Nala over the rainbow bridge. Though a heartbreaking experience, I found relief in her being at peace.

Then a severely sprained ankle left me trapped at home. The silence seemed to loudly scream that Nala was gone. Family and friends did everything to keep my spirits up, but nighttime was lonely. As my ankle healed and normalcy returned, my house still felt empty—no pitter patter, no greeter, no one to kiss goodnight. Days kept me busy but returning to an empty house was depressing. One afternoon a neighbor walked by with a beautiful German Shepherd. Upon inquiring, I discovered it was a rescue.

Rescuing wasn’t something I’d ever considered. An unknown history, personality, and temperament concerned me. I’d always envisioned myself getting a puppy, but after researching, my perspective flipped. Give a dog a new lease on life? Provide them opportunities they’ve never experienced? Show them adoration and devotion they’ve been denied, but continue giving to others? I realized I needed a rescued dog.

Sookie came to Front Street Animal Shelter from the streets of Sacramento—an unclaimed stray, curious yet uncertain of the world. I saw her picture and had to meet her. It was love at first greet (I even teared up), and no decision was easier. Going to bed that night with a new roommate, though still mysterious, my house felt like home again.

Showing her the world in a way she’d never seen, and loving her in a way she’d never been loved, was everything. Watching Sookie become a confident, well-behaved social butterfly made me proud. I quickly became a rescue advocate; it was truly fulfilling, and I had to give back. Volunteering was the answer.

No one visits the shelter dressed to impress—you leave wearing fur. I’d noticed a handsome guy from afar, and his charisma was intriguing. In passing, eyes would meet, and smiles were exchanged. Leaving my comfort zone, I messaged him on Facebook. Paths continued crossing, and though I’d seen Bobby with animals, seeing him with Sookie at an event melted my heart. Rescue conversations led to other commonalities. Falling for this guy, I already had the most important stamp of approval—that of my dog! Sookie and I found the pack member we didn’t know we needed to be complete. Now the charming man on the other end of the leash will soon become my husband! My wishes came true when I found my pup, my purpose, and my person on Front Street.

Each year, Petco Love invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Kristin won Front Street Animal Shelter in California a 2018 Holiday Wishes award.
