Adopted Dog Leads Pet Mom to Her Perfect Match
Dooley was Colleen’s original Prince Charming, but he also turned out to be a wingman to Mr. Right.
Colleen + Dooley
An adoptable Cocker Spaniel named Dooley turned out to be Colleen’s best friend, her Prince Charming, and her matchmaker.
"As I introduced myself, Dooley pulled to go over and meet the same guy. Within minutes, Dooley, Patrick, and I were deep in conversation (and belly rubs). A month later, Dooley joined me and Patrick on our first date."
Many girls dream of meeting her Prince Charming. In a single weekend, I met two. I was a 28-year-old female, single, hoping my Prince Charming would show up. I had started thinking about adopting a dog. I had grown up with a dog and thought the companionship would be great. My girlfriends also assured me that adopting a dog would be a great way to meet potential suitors. Guys like dogs, right? I connected with an adoption counselor at Furkids and started meeting potential dogs. After a few unsuccessful visits, I decided to give it some time. I knew that when I met the right dog, I would know immediately.
One evening, the adoption counselor reached out and asked if I was still interested. I scrolled through the available dogs and a black Cocker Spaniel caught my eye. I asked if I could meet him the next day after work. As I walked into the shelter, I found the sweetest dog sitting on the lap of the receptionist. The minute I saw Dooley, I knew he was the one. I was not expecting to adopt a dog that evening, so I signed all of Dooley’s papers and made plans to return on Saturday to pick him up.
I showed up early Saturday morning, ready to bring Dooley home. Within minutes of walking in the door, he gently hopped up on the sofa and laid his head on my lap. Our bond was immediate. Later that evening, a girlfriend invited me to brunch with some of her friends. She even promised to select a location that would allow dogs so that I could bring my new best friend along. I’ll be honest — brunch didn’t sound exciting. But showing off Dooley sounded like a deal.
The next morning, I showed up 45 minutes late as I adjusted to life with a furry friend. As I scurried to find my friends, I was taken aback by a guy who sat across the table, apparently having brunch with us. As I introduced myself, Dooley pulled to go over and meet the same guy. Within minutes, Dooley, Patrick, and I were deep in conversation (and belly rubs). By the time brunch ended, I knew something was different. A month later, Dooley joined me and Patrick on our first date.
Over six years later, Dooley is still my best friend. He is my original Prince Charming, and there’s a bond between us that can’t be broken. Patrick and I have been married for nearly four years, and Dooley is preparing to become a big brother in March. Each April, we celebrate our Family Gotcha Weekend. We do something fun together, remembering the weekend when not just one, but two perfect soulmates came into my life.
Each year, Petco Love Holiday Wishes campaign invites adopters to share stories of how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards. This story by Colleen won Furkids in Atlanta, Georgia a 2020 Holiday Wishes award.
